Glossary

  • Ace

When a player throws their disc into the basket from the tee of a hole.

  • Best Disc

After redoing a throw or taking multiple attempts, the player can choose the most favorable disc as their next lie.

  • Birdie

Achieving 1 stroke under par on a hole.

  • Bogey

Taking 1 stroke over par on a hole.

  • C1 (Circle One)

Any area within 10 meters (32.8 feet) of a hole's designated basket.

  • CTP (Closest to Pin)

The disc that lands closest to the basket from the tee.

  • Drive

A throw from the designated tee area of a new hole.

  • Driver

A type of disc that has a speed from 7 through 14.

  • Fairway

The area between the teepad and C1 that is inbounds and not in the rough (bushes, ditch, thick forest stand, etc.)

  • Grenade

A style of throw where you throw the disc like you are doing a backhand drive, except you throw the disc upside down and you pull your disc from low to high. The correct grip is to flip the disc upside-down and put your thumb on the inside of the rim with pointer finger wrapped over top. The rest of your fingers are placed on top of the disc.

  • Lie

Where you take your next throw from. Players usually mark their lie with a mini marker or by using their thrown disc at rest as their mark.

  • Mando

A designated tree or pole that a disc must pass on the correct side as indicated by an arrow.

  • Metallurgy Power

The strongest power in the game. It is unlocked after a player strikes the basket with their disc from the tee (e.g., hitting top band, bottom pole, chains or cage, and includes aces).*

*Metallurgy Power is earned even if the basket is hit on a rethrow or if the throw is redone.

  • Midrange (Mid)

A type of disc that has a speed from 4 through 6.

  • OB

Out of bounds. OB areas can include lakes, streams, areas behind fences, and areas created with ropes or painted lines.

A +1 penalty stroke is assigned to players whose disc land out of bounds.

  • Pace

A player's normal walking step. A pace should be roughly 2.5 feet for an adult.

  • Putter

A type of disc that has a speed of 3 and under.

  • Roller

A style of throw where most of the distance comes from rolling the disc on the ground.

  • Rough

An area that is off the main path and full of obstacles like bushes and trees.

  • Style of Throw

The way someone throws their disc (e.g., backhand, forehand, tomahawk, thumber, roller, etc.)

  • Straddleputt

A type of putt where both feet are placed side by side (not staggered) with toes facing the basket.

  • Tee-off

The first throw taken on a new hole from its designated tee area.

  • Thumber

A overhand style of throw where the disc is thrown almost straight over your head like a baseball or football. The thumb is placed inside the disc rim and 1-2 fingers on top of the disc.

  • Tomahawk

An overhand style of throw where the disc is thrown almost straight over your head like a baseball or football. Most players use the same grip they would for a forehand throw with thumb on top of the disc and 1-2 fingers inside the rim.

  • Upshot

Any approach shot or throw taken after tee-off that is outside of C1 (Circle One).

  • Water Hazard

A body of water like a lake, pond, river, stream, or creek. These are considered out of bounds. If a player's disc lands in them, they receive a +1 penalty stroke.

  • Worst Disc

When a player uses a power that makes an opponent use their "worst disc" after rethrowing, the opponent must play from their least favorable disc location. If it is unclear which is least favorable, the player must choose for their opponent.
